THE CAT WITH ONE LIFE
The sun dissolves;
The night falls…
The stars crystallize
Inside the sky’s bath
… I sat on the pavement
In the backyard
In the pitch-black darkness
Through the screen of teardrops
…I saw a pair of iridescent eyes
It appeared to ignite a bunch of whiskers
Suspended by it
They were staring at me…not blinking_
I was too disenchanted to run at it…
Besides, observant to note
That it meant no harm
I hadn’t wiped my tears to identify the sight _
My usual self would have taken to the heels
If he realized it was a cat
The unexpected meeting lasted
The moon reaches the sky’s apex:
At that moment, the outline of a cat
Was drawn gracefully by the bright moonlight
…sitting in front of me:
With forelimbs planted to the muddy ground
Like pillars
The color of its fur was dark;
It moved its head right and left
Like a seesaw_
As if it wanted to have a good look at my face
This was strange:
The gesture the dog makes
To show sympathy
Meanwhile
It is one week
Since I had been sobbing night-till-morning
To add to my apparent tragedy, I was mourning
The death of my father
I let my whole life go on a downward spiral;
I was on the verge of a mental breakdown
The time is 5am
For once, the sorrow melts away
By virtue of my curiosity to study
This exceptional creature
That stayed with me all night
I named the cat Felix
And cuddled him by my side
I thought I had stumbled upon a discovery
Which I would record and develop
As my knowledge broadens…
I knew I had derived inspiration
From an unexpected source
Anything is possible in reality!
I can raise my life back to orbit after all…,
I thought
_it need not be in some other lifetime
The greenish glow from the cat’s eyes
Waned down by the breaking sun;
My desire to study science better
Intensifies…
As time marched on,
It evolved to become
The only life I had
The day broke out fully;
My mother was stunned…
Before she could make a stride,
The cat fled
Afterwards, she said to me
This is your best friend…
One week later
The cat abides with me_
He becomes my companion;
Most of all
The first facility
In my modest laboratory
With time
I became familiar with cats:
Felix became a window
Through which I explored
The cat family
Albeit
I deem it fitting
To publish my mini theory
To the world
In the third world
Pet cats are almost rare…
In some parts of Africa
Cats are deemed as an enigma
Their solitude…
Oftentimes, mistaken for villainy…
Their elusive personality
Has rendered them prone, as well,
To (unhealthy) superstition
It is ironic…
In Australia
Cats are employed…
As reliable companions
To the mentally challenged
Traumatized…
Conflicted; and socially inept kids_
Undergoing rehabilitation…
In psychiatric clinics
‘The cat with nine lives’
The figure of speech
_Involving Felix_
Has mingled …
With the psyche of many
_In a tangled helix_
Oblivious of the context,
Many poachers have skewed it
To mean hunting spree
The shrieks of twisted minds
Have rendered the mews of cats
Inaudible
They sweep them off…
Toward the fringes of their niche
Expecting them to roam the earth…
Once more
Like zombies_
So that they would make a game of them again
This has remained life’s motto
Survival is the only option
And not extinction
For the cat
It becomes a driving force for behavioral adaptation
_life is conservative indeed.
I have found cats to be modest and agile
_With impressive traits
Of smartness and guile_
Cats are gentle but strong as well
…at ease but very swift
In the African community it is common knowledge
The back of the cat never touches the ground
The latter is the last line
In tribute to Felix catus
By virtue of the beauty in behavior
Cats have made the one life they have
Worth nine lives
And thus, carving out a noble niche
In the biosphere
It is unusual…
For me to say that it was a cat
That indirectly lay
A prominent valve in my heart_
A heart that was once broken…
The heart is beating now!
…Uniformly;
Fixing energy
To the distinct sphere
Of human endeavor
Therefore
It is no secret
‘The cat with one life’…
Will always be
The prominent spike
In the wave train
Generated by my life’s pulse
