How much weight should I put in dog back pack?
I've just bought a back pack for my medium sized terrier cross to help him get more benefit from his on leash walks. We go out for about an hour and a half each day mostly on rough hilly ground.I'm worried about putting in too much weight and putting a strain on his body. He's six years old.
Generally 1/6 (15%) of body weight as a maximum for a healthy dog. This includes the weight of the pack itself so don't forget to count it. This will vary by breed and build. Start out with less and work up. Make sure the pack fits correctly and check it for rubbing often. Make sure the load is balanced on both sides, if you don't really need to carry things water bottles are a good thing to use, they are easy to balance and easy to control the weight. Make sure the weight of the pack is towards his shoulders not in the middle of his back like a horse, the dogs strength is in the shoulders. IF the pack shifts to one side either the straps are too loose or the load not balanced. You can make strap covers out of fleece to protect from buckles. Some of the better packs have compression straps to tighten the load to keep it from shifting around and reduce the packs bulk. Watch for rubbing, sore feet and back/hip problems like limping or not wanting to put the pack on. If you do pack other things make sure that they are not poking him in the ribs, avoid things with square edges. A small towel can be laid across the back similar to a horse blanket to reduce rubbing. Its a good idea to get the dog a checkup with the vet before starting packing, mention what you plan to do so the vet can check for areas prone to problems. Since he is an adult the growth plates are closed but in the future a pup under 18-24 mths should never carry max load until hips are xrayed. Your vet may want to xray your dog if you plan to pack much weight. Even a couple of 20oz bottles will make him work harder and are fairly safe weight for most any dog.
Also remember you may need to do it in shorter distances at first and that his feet will take more wear because of the additional weight. Shoes are a good idea or at least something like mushers secret to harden pawpads if this becomes an issue.
If you ever decide to do real backpacking with him make sure you double bag with ziplock bags everything you don't want to get wet and dont pack things that can NOT get wet (more than one dog has jumped in a creek with pack) and remove his pack if possible on narrow ledges.
