Four Simple Steps to Help Make 'Your' Home a Home For Your Dog Too
1- Give them their own space. Designate an area or piece of carpet, bed, if it's an older larger dog consider and Orthopedic Mat, and make it an area where they can be in the 'action'. Dogs are social so they will want to be a part of things. They may also like to watch what's going on outside from a spot that gives them a lot of visibility. Cats for example might like a view of the birdfeeder, so think of what might interest your dog and give them access to be a part of that. Another idea is a blanket that you can move to where they want to be. You can even take the blanket when travelling and they have the familiar feel in the car and if they are at the cottage or grandmas house.
2- Thankfully there are fabrics that are stain resistant. If you are training a new puppy this might need to be factored into you décor. Leather couches have the added feature where the pet hair does not 'stick' and you can simply wipe away any hair that does exist. When choosing colors one good idea may include similar colors to your pet. If you have a chocolate lab, perhaps you may want to consider a chocolate micro suede fabric. Like the leather the pet hair comes off easily and also resists most scratches.
3- If you have a small space you may need to be more creative with finding spots for the large bags of dog food or perhaps where the dishes go. You personally will want to hide any mess while Rover will need to find his food and water easily. Mudrooms, laundry rooms, they can serve as ideal spots for hiding away leashes, toys, the food containers and more.
4- You will need to make sure your outdoor space is pet friendly as well. Raised gardens or flower beds that have substantial borders sectioning them off may be enough to keep your dog out in some cases. If you use any weed killer or fertilizer on your lawn or garden you will need to know if it is toxic for your pet and insure the animal stays clear for a period so they cannot get sick after the area is sprayed. If they are to spend any time outside they will need shade in the summer and protection from the cold in the winter. This can be accomplished with an insulated dog house. A pet friendly back yard is just as important as the pet friendly house.
