help,ticks on a thick-coated, shaggy, matted, nordic husky?
my wife and i have had a problem keeping the coat on our dog clean and unmatted and have resorted to brushing him almost 3 times a week, nose to tail, even tough his shedding season is over for spring. he ran away the other day and now he is infested with ticks and the half dozen or so that survive long enough to fall off have laid eggs in a coat that is too thick to possibly sort through thoroughly. i know shaving a huskey is a bad idea and will only use it as a last option as it will require many washings to get the flea and tick shampoo to work in such a thick coat and i fear useing medication or medicated collars because our toddlers love of close contact with her best friend. what are some option and opinions ?
The collars aren't really the best option for thick-furred dogs, as it only reaches around the neck/chest area.
You don't mention where your from, but I am guessing America? Here in Australia it is very common to shave Huskies, as it is much too hot for them to live comfortably with the coat, so I am aware about the loss of guard-hairs, but because there is no snow, or even very cold weather, here, it is not an issue, but if you have snow at any time of the year, try and dodge around the clipping option.
I would suggest going to see your vet, because all medications/strong washes, that you put on your pet will restrict the contact your toddler is allowed with it, and a vet may take it in for a complete check-over to ensure there aren't any nasty ticks in the coat.
The only other thing I can suggest is to sit down for a few hours and slowly make your way through your pet's fur. Then get your wife to go through it. And then you again. This is what we are taught when I was training as a vet nurse. Put all ticks into a container of petrol as you pull them off (despite common belief, there isn't a 'better' way to pull off a tick, just grab it as far down as possible and pull off using tweezers). And then soak him in some mild but good quality tick-wash. While his fur is wet, go through it again, and a last time once it is dried again. Don't let your little girl near him until you are sure all the ticks are off, and he is dry from the wash.
