Flyball / Agility?

I started going to obedience classes with my whippet late last year and we were quite behind of everyone else..
Even though I had started training him simple things at home...I had always used food rewards..so when we went to training ..he wouldnt do it..
So over the christmas break I had worked really hard on getting things right without food..
We were getting really close but things have been up and down the past month or two so training time was limited..
So today I got prince out and was shocked to see how well he had gone...never has he gone better...
Anyway...I had gone to obedience class to find something he was good at like obedience in genral or flyball/ agilty..
He imediatly picked up the flyball and now I really want to train in it and compete when we get better..
He already knows the basics obedience .and .jump, weave and tunnel...
But what will be expected and needed to learn before we start?

You are doing great!
My whippets were never too good at the weave but they learned to do all other the obstacles and they remember them even after years without practice.
I would not expect a whippet to act as a border collie in agility.
I think the most important thing with a whippet is to keep it fun and don't give him too many repetitions of the same exercise.

Help with building jump standards???

I'm building some jump standards. I have successfully put it together except for the cups used to hold the poles. Does anyone know any good places to get these or other things to substitute for these? Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks so much for your help!!!

You can get jump cups at any eqnglish tack dealer locally and online. Ebay has them too as well as State Line Tack. I never buy from Dover they are more expensive then anyone I think.

As for substituting I can suggest useing tuna cans or small butter dishes cut them in 1/2 then attach them to the standards where you want them it would be the cheapest/quickest way till you get the real deal in. Another way is to buy so End Caps for water piping in the size of the poles you plan to use you can again cut these in have then screw or nail them on.

Dog agility - weave poles?

When doing weave poles in agility, do the dogs have to enter the weaves a certain way (like right or left)? If you have any other tips on training weave poles, please let me know.

Yes they do!

They have to enter the weaves with their left shoulder or the poles on their left side.

If you're training at home, be careful w/the spacing of the poles because dogs get into a rhythm with their feet & if it's not properly spaced like the competition poles, you and your dog will run into problems later

Agility training?

i have a 1 year old mini schnauzer and would like to train him in agility. the classes near me run every 2 weeks and i have missed this one.
what should i do at home to prepare him for the lessons so he doesn't spook? and what is the best way to train a dog for the sport?

Does anyone know about dog agility training?

I have a 8 month old dog that's a real jumper. I've been working on getting him comfortable with small jumps, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips, or good web sites to check out for more information. Thanks a lot!

I have just started training my Maltese (yes, agility Maltese) for agility. I know he's not a traditional agility breed, but I have some agility equipment as enrichment toys in my doggy daycare, and he loves the tunnels and the tire. He likes to go down the slide, so I think we can get him on the A-frame alright.

It's great exercise for both of you, a great way to bond with your dog, and just a whole lot of fun all around. Remember, different trainers have different training styles. If the first one doesn't work, don't give up. Best of luck.

What age can a puppy start agility training safely?

He's 6 months old and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, he can do the tunnel already, but whats a good age to start getting them over jumps?

Jumps and weave poles can really stress a growing dog's hips and joints. I tend to wait until the dog is a year old before I start those. However, you can start "small" by teaching a puppy to jump over a book, or to walk around 2 pails.

Can a dog blind in one eye compete in AKC or UKC agility and obedience?

Do they get some sort of handicap? And is it possible to train a dog that is blind in one eye to excel especially when it comes to weaving? She is still a pup and we are working on basic obedience right now.

YES, they can compete in Rally, just not thru the AKC/UKC...

Where can one get international level dog agility course maps online?

Looking for some course maps of international level competition in dog agility to set up practice sequences at home.

The AKC website has the course maps from the World Championships in Austria this past weekend posted. USA brought home 2 Silvers this year! Way to Go Medium Dog Team & WOOOOHOOOO Marcus Topps & 9 yr old BC Juice!

AKC National Championships Courses for the past 3 years are posted on the AKC website. http://www.akc.org/events/agility/national_agility_championship/past_events/
2008 AKC Agility Invitationals: http://www.akc.org/nationalchampionship/index.cfm?section=news#agility
USDAA also posts the course maps from their World Championships every year. http://www.usdaa.com/news.cfm Look in the archives each year in November.
I don't know if any of the other Agility Organizations post their Championship Course Maps. I only follow AKC & USDAA.
But these links will give you plenty of very challenging courses to practice.
