Which anti-barking device works better?
I am opposed to using a collar that "shocks" my dog, but there are two other options of anti-bark devices. There is one that sprays a citronella out of it towards the dog, and there is another that emits a high-pitched tone that they don't like. Which one works better? It's a 7-pound 15 week old Shih-tzu.
also - does the one that sprays citronella make my house smell that way?? Yuck!
It is very important for you to come to understand that it is the nature of dogs to bark. Be patient. Dogs bark for a lot of reasons but in every case it is their form of communication.
Would you ask your child not to use their voice to communicate? Of course not. But you do teach your child when it is appropriate to speak and when it is not. You teach your child what speach is acceptable and what is not.
Teach your dog that you don't like barking in a non scolding and non threatening way. I have a dog that loves to bark, but by gently teaching him with repetitive gesture he has learned now to not bark when I ssshhhh him and say no barking with a gentle but firm voice.
How I did this was in every instance of his barking I would give him cues of when to bark, by play barking with him when the reason was a good reason, and by telling him sshhh, no barking when the reason was not a good one.
At first when you begin this training it takes closeness and proximity with your pet. When he is sitting near you and barks for the wrong reason put your hand around his mouth and gently, but firmly as he will allow, hold his mouth shut and say the words ssshhh, no barking and point your finger at him close to his face with a light but firmly disapproving voice.
It takes a little time but it is worth the investment and doesn't use negative methods that cause pain or discomfort. And, best of all, it gives you and your dog a closer relationship.
Don't take potentially harmful short cuts for convenience sake when all it really takes is patience on your part.
