Will a dog whistle or ultrasonic bark controller (the non-collar type) work through apartment walls?

My neighbor will not keep her dogs from barking at early morning hours for hours straight and I am losing sleep over it since I can hear the dogs very clearly through the walls of our apartments and she will not put them outside. I would not like to call someone like the police just yet and hope something I can do myself will solve the problem. I have seen dog whistles and those indoor/outdoor ultrasonic devises that go off when they pick up a dog barking or manually. Would either of these work through the walls of an apartment? Are walls are thin enough that when the dogs are barking, it sounds like they are in my apartment, but I also want something that is quite to humans, so she has no idea that I am doing this.

I had the same problem with the dog downstairs. I tried a dog whistle, and the bark controller and neither of them worked. I even tried putting it right outside of the door to their apartment that's in my foyer and it still didn't pick up his barking. I tried it on my dog just to see if it was defective- it wasn't, but the bark controller didn't go off unless it was less than 2 feet from the dog. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you're probably going to have to address the issue with your landlord.

Which anti-barking device works better?

I am opposed to using a collar that "shocks" my dog, but there are two other options of anti-bark devices. There is one that sprays a citronella out of it towards the dog, and there is another that emits a high-pitched tone that they don't like. Which one works better? It's a 7-pound 15 week old Shih-tzu.

also - does the one that sprays citronella make my house smell that way?? Yuck!

It is very important for you to come to understand that it is the nature of dogs to bark. Be patient. Dogs bark for a lot of reasons but in every case it is their form of communication.

Would you ask your child not to use their voice to communicate? Of course not. But you do teach your child when it is appropriate to speak and when it is not. You teach your child what speach is acceptable and what is not.

Teach your dog that you don't like barking in a non scolding and non threatening way. I have a dog that loves to bark, but by gently teaching him with repetitive gesture he has learned now to not bark when I ssshhhh him and say no barking with a gentle but firm voice.

How I did this was in every instance of his barking I would give him cues of when to bark, by play barking with him when the reason was a good reason, and by telling him sshhh, no barking when the reason was not a good one.

At first when you begin this training it takes closeness and proximity with your pet. When he is sitting near you and barks for the wrong reason put your hand around his mouth and gently, but firmly as he will allow, hold his mouth shut and say the words ssshhh, no barking and point your finger at him close to his face with a light but firmly disapproving voice.

It takes a little time but it is worth the investment and doesn't use negative methods that cause pain or discomfort. And, best of all, it gives you and your dog a closer relationship.

Don't take potentially harmful short cuts for convenience sake when all it really takes is patience on your part.

How can I get my dog to stop barking without using a bark collar?

My dog does nothing but bark and it is starting to bug the people next door. they have already called the police to shut him up! I've tried to use a bark collar but I feel guilty when I use it on him. So I just need some tidbit answers that could help me. Any answers would be great!

put five parts water and one part vinagar in a spray bottle. when he starts barking, squirt him in the face [avoid his eyes] and say 'quiet!'. not in an angry ton, but a stern, matter of fact tone.
this is supposed to motivate them to stop because they hate getting squirted and something about the vinagar is supposed to make them stop. also, take him on walks and to a dog park where he can bark all he wants. just make it clear that at home, barking is not permitted.

Has anyone had any luck with the citronella anti-bark collars???

My Doberman/German Shepard mix is a nuisance barker. I've tried positive reinforcement training and electric shock collar (which I didn't like and didn't work). He barks at anything and everything from birds to people talking a block away. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the citronella collar or anything else that would help to stop or at least lessen his barking. Please don't tell me to take him to a trainer, there aren't any around for hundreds of miles.

Sorry....my brother has a fifteen month old dobie, and he has the same problem with him! He's tried one of these collars, and it was just a waste of money!! He stopped yapping momentarily the first time it was used, and then just ignored it from then on!!

Have you ever watched The Dog Whisperer on Sky 3, around 6.p.m.? Or check on Amazon.co.uk for some of his DVD's. If you don't have a trainer nearby ( and , ulitmately, training is going to be the only answer) these DVD's might just be the thing for you!

why isn't my petsafe bark control working?

I just bought the petsafe brak control ultrasonic machine and it doesnt seem to be working. It only works when I actually press the button. I am i doing something wrong?
It only goes off if i hit the button. its has a bettery and doesnt plug in it doesnt have level changes either. and i have two chihuahuas with a very looud pitch bark and it only goes off if i press the button. Why?

It only goes off if dog barks at a certain level. If your dog is just making low noises, it won't go off. Set the level on high & on audible & be sure it is on & plugged in right. it also only covers small range in spite of what they claim so it really only works in 1 room.

What is the best dog barking collar?

That stuff is unnatural. You know why dogs are called "Mans best friend"? Because they protect you and are loyal to you. They bark to scare intruders away. Try training methods such as a tin can with pennies that you can shake that will distract him. Did you know that you can also train them not to bark when necessary and to have indoor barking. That's what i did with my Dakota. Its kind of cute when he uses his indoor bark.

Is there another way to get your dog to stop barking other than a barking collar?

When I leave my house my dog starts to bark, and obviously that's unacceptable. I was wondering if there is an alternative method to control this other than using a barking collar. If not, do barking collar's mildly shock the dog?

You can try a number of different remedies to quiet his barking. One would be to do aversion training which incorporates some kind of noise that you can make when they bark which will make them see that when they bark you do something that they don't like, such as putting pebbles into a can and taping the top shut. When they bark, shake the can and that should stop them. You can also try to do positive reinforcement where you reward him for being quiet and ignore him when he barks. It really depends on why he is barking. Some dogs bark out of boredom and some bark from fear. Try to figure out why he is barking and then you will be able to help stop him from barking. You can also try to kennel him when you leave so that he is not afraid. He is probably barking because he is alone. Barking collars do shock the dogs and I would not recommend them.

why do my ears hurt when my dog's ultrasonic bark control activates?

They don't hurt, but it feels like pins are poking my inner ear. Why????

I can only guess, but you may have exceptional high range hearing.

VERY unlikely, but possible.

I used to go into jewelry stores and museums, that didn't turn off their detectors, and I would get an extreme high end end ring in my ear. (that no one else could hear)

The 1st time it happened, I had no idea what was going on, and they kept trying to trick me, saying that they "turned it off", yet I still had a headache from it.????

I went in for hearing tests, and they found out that I could hear past their 20K-21K hearing tests.

Everyone that I have talked to, said that I was the only "case" they had ever seen, that could hear that high.

I am now in my '60's, and I doubt that I can hear that anymore, but I know that I can still hear up to at least 18K, which is ridiculous for someone my age.

(I have a VERY good 1/3rd octave EQ, and I can hear small "tweaks" in it.
The rest of the system is a very good Yamaha/Crown K-1/JBL sound system)

Why does my dog bark whenever someone knocks on the door? Or if I nock on the wall so it sounds like a door?
