Are dog training (shock) collars safe and do they work?

I am considering using a training collar to teach my dog boundaries. I need to be able to keep her off leash, but she runs off if I let her off the leash. A fence, even an invisible fence, is out of the question as its not my house. I've tried teaching her boundaries for the last 5 months but it is not working well. She won't respond to "come" unless she's in the mood. I want to use a shock collar but I worry it may be inhumane. Are they effective and are they safe to use?

First off shock collars are not inhumane. Yes they are safe to use.
They do not give a strong shock. Yes I tried it on my own arm before ever putting it on the dog.
Properly used as a training tool they work very well for certain things. You need to read all the information that comes with the collar and learn how to use it.
Then you need to set up visable boundries for your dog. Your dog must have some sort of visable thing to see to learn where the boundries are. Like flags.

If your dog does not respong to the come commad or only does so at her pleasure you need to go back and do some basic obedience work with your pet. You need to have the basics down and if your dog does not come you do not have those down yet.

I need help picking a cat name to match personality and looks?

My cat is a female tabby- she's has soft long fur that shines golden in the sunlight- her fur is brown with darker brown tiger stripes. She has BRIGHT green eyes. She is very calm- never excitable unless in danger. Loves to rub up against you and just lie in your lap while you pet her- she is very strange in the fact that she gets along perfectly with my Beagle- and my dog hates cats- but for some reason she came up to him and just rubbed up against him and now they are like best friends- if anybody has any good and somewhat unusual name to match my cat it would be greatly helpful. (Also she was a stray living in a gutter by my house until i started feeding her- she likes to leave presents of bird feathers on my back door mat and loves to just lie around and be lazy during the day) Thank you to all who can help me!!! I'm getting her a real collar so I want to get her a name tag too- but when you get a name tag you usually have to put a name on it! Thanks again!

Will a dog whistle or ultrasonic bark controller (the non-collar type) work through apartment walls?

My neighbor will not keep her dogs from barking at early morning hours for hours straight and I am losing sleep over it since I can hear the dogs very clearly through the walls of our apartments and she will not put them outside. I would not like to call someone like the police just yet and hope something I can do myself will solve the problem. I have seen dog whistles and those indoor/outdoor ultrasonic devises that go off when they pick up a dog barking or manually. Would either of these work through the walls of an apartment? Are walls are thin enough that when the dogs are barking, it sounds like they are in my apartment, but I also want something that is quite to humans, so she has no idea that I am doing this.

Any suggestions would be appreciated it

I had the same problem with the dog downstairs. I tried a dog whistle, and the bark controller and neither of them worked. I even tried putting it right outside of the door to their apartment that's in my foyer and it still didn't pick up his barking. I tried it on my dog just to see if it was defective- it wasn't, but the bark controller didn't go off unless it was less than 2 feet from the dog. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you're probably going to have to address the issue with your landlord.

No. What are you feeding? If you were only eating Ramen and beans, you'd fart a lot, too. Try a better quality food that agrees with him more.

How can I get my dog to stop barking without using a bark collar?

My dog does nothing but bark and it is starting to bug the people next door. they have already called the police to shut him up! I've tried to use a bark collar but I feel guilty when I use it on him. So I just need some tidbit answers that could help me. Any answers would be great!

put five parts water and one part vinagar in a spray bottle. when he starts barking, squirt him in the face [avoid his eyes] and say 'quiet!'. not in an angry ton, but a stern, matter of fact tone.
this is supposed to motivate them to stop because they hate getting squirted and something about the vinagar is supposed to make them stop. also, take him on walks and to a dog park where he can bark all he wants. just make it clear that at home, barking is not permitted.

But when I press the shock button, it only makes him yelp. Is there a brand that just makes the dog drop to the ground, like on Cops?

These do work for correcting bad behavior..I wish it was legal to put them on prisoners especailly repeat offenders. They do make some that are adjustable with settings up to 7 or so. You may need to put longer electrodes on them to really touch the dogs skin. Remember they are used for training only... not for fun. If the dog is smart enough it wont take long and they will learn not do what ever you are trying to correct. It sounds like it is working since they yelp...do they keep doing what it is that is causing you to punish them? If so maybe they need more than just a shock collar.

Has anyone had any luck with the citronella anti-bark collars???

My Doberman/German Shepard mix is a nuisance barker. I've tried positive reinforcement training and electric shock collar (which I didn't like and didn't work). He barks at anything and everything from birds to people talking a block away. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the citronella collar or anything else that would help to stop or at least lessen his barking. Please don't tell me to take him to a trainer, there aren't any around for hundreds of miles.

Sorry....my brother has a fifteen month old dobie, and he has the same problem with him! He's tried one of these collars, and it was just a waste of money!! He stopped yapping momentarily the first time it was used, and then just ignored it from then on!!

Have you ever watched The Dog Whisperer on Sky 3, around 6.p.m.? Or check on Amazon.co.uk for some of his DVD's. If you don't have a trainer nearby ( and , ulitmately, training is going to be the only answer) these DVD's might just be the thing for you!

Leather or Fabric Sofa?

We are going to be investing in a new sofa/loveseat set soon.

We have 2 cats, a medium sized dog (that seems to smell no matter how often we bathe him!) and 3 kids: 15,13 and 8. We are very hard on our furniture--we have lots of company over and our sofa and love seat get a LOT of use.

What would be the most durable: leather or a good fabric?

Our cats don't get up on the furniture and our dog doesn't shed (but he sure does smell!) so hair isn't a problem. I am more concerned with stains, smells, and the general livability of the material. Our home is very very comfortable and inviting and I want my furniture to portray that as well. I want something functional that looks nice too. I am wanting something that will last me awhile--at least until my kids move out and go to college. : ( Any ideas?

Go with microfiber.
idk about pets because we dont have pets but we do have kids around around and drawing on stuff with pens.

idk about stores but you should get a microfiber sofa that you can just unzip if your pets or kids go pee pee on it, or spill milk you can just put it in the washer and then put it back on.

& IT doesnt cost that bad, and it looks great even after a while.
It looks great if you want the comfy feeling because itll look like you can just sit down and watch a great movie with your family instead of, "OMG, THERES A STAIN HOW AM I SUPPOSE TO GET THAT OFFF, oh noooo!"
If you worry about stains, its washable.
leather, can rip and a little costly, and it wears off after a while.. when the kids and pets jumping and playing around, and it will look saggy in a while, we have a leather and a microfiber couch. haha.
