How does one go about applying for air traffic control training in Oklahoma City?

I am a sophomore at The Ohio State University and I am majoring in Aviation. I have known for some time now that I want to be an air traffic controller with the FAA. (Both of my parents are retired ATCs of over 25 years). Does anybody have any insight about the process I must go through to apply and get into initial training? Thanks!

Okay. This is going to be a long answer. Here we go.

1). Apply to an opening at the FAA website. There are about 4-5 openings a year. Fill out the application. You must have a bachelor's degree (any will do) and/or 3 years of work experience or a combination of both. You aviation degree should be a plus.

2). You will receive an email asking you to take the AT-SAT. It is about 8 hours long and tests basic math skills and aviation knowledge. That is only a small portion. The rest of the test is like a video game where you must guide planes to their destinations. The majority of the exam tests your ability to organize and manage time efficiently. You must get at least a 70 to pass.

3). You will then get another email with a geography/job preference that you would like to work. You can either work in a terminal at an airport or in an enroute center. You can also put two places you would like to work.

4). When that place becomes available (or when that place decides to hire), you will be contacted for the pre-hiring process. You have two choices: PEPC route or non-PEPC. I would highly suggest the PEPC route because they will do your drug screening, interview, psychological test, and give you your firm offer of employment the same day. BUT, you will have to pay all of the traveling expenses because they are usually held in few cities across the country. The non-PEPC process takes longer because the FAA has to coordinate and schedule these things close to where you live. I chose this route b/c I'm an idiot and it took me over a year to hired! So please, save yourself about 6 months and go PEPC.

5). You will receive your firm offer of employment as well as a class date once everything goes through. They will pay for your travel, lodging, and food while at the academy.

Agility training?

i have a 1 year old mini schnauzer and would like to train him in agility. the classes near me run every 2 weeks and i have missed this one.
what should i do at home to prepare him for the lessons so he doesn't spook? and what is the best way to train a dog for the sport?

Does anyone know about dog agility training?

I have a 8 month old dog that's a real jumper. I've been working on getting him comfortable with small jumps, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips, or good web sites to check out for more information. Thanks a lot!

I have just started training my Maltese (yes, agility Maltese) for agility. I know he's not a traditional agility breed, but I have some agility equipment as enrichment toys in my doggy daycare, and he loves the tunnels and the tire. He likes to go down the slide, so I think we can get him on the A-frame alright.

It's great exercise for both of you, a great way to bond with your dog, and just a whole lot of fun all around. Remember, different trainers have different training styles. If the first one doesn't work, don't give up. Best of luck.

Which is the best bit for control and training a young horse?

My four year old horse im training, I want to know which bit is the best for control and traing I have been riding him with a snapple bit with just D-rings I seem to not have no control to make him do what I want him to do.

A D-ring snaffle should be enough if you have much experience training horses. I'm guessing that you probably have ridden already trained horses plenty but not so many young ones. In which case you should definitely enlist the help of an reputable trainer as you may be making serious mistakes you're not aware of or you may even be putting yourself in danger. A lot of times the stronger bits will get a rider in trouble and make the horse's mouth tougher if used incorrectly. I'd try doing lots of downward transitions to halt to get my brakes. If you can't stop you can pull on your outside rein hard and kind of turn his head into the rail. He might bunk his head a bit, but he'll be alright. I'd also practice circles and using my outside leg to push him into my inside rein. If you insist on getting a stronger bit, I'd stay away from anything with a port or shank (unless you're using it under the supervision of a trainer). If used very incorrectly those bits can actually flip a horse. But really, try to get at least a couple lessons with a good trainer. Good luck and be safe!

Training opinions: Should a trainer discipline a horse by smacking it?

I've been hearing and reading a lot of opinions on training. Mostly, that question
SHOULD A PERSON SMACK A HORSE TO TEACH THEM?
IS IT A GOOD METHOD OF DISCIPLINE TO HIT A HORSE?
I would like to hear people's opinions on these questions.
But please BACK UP YOUR REASONING.

I would start by mentioning that I've raised three children to adulthood and never hit (spank is just a niced up term for hitting) my children. Not once. My grandsons are now being raised in the same fashion. My kids were complimented by teachers for their mature approach to their jobs as students throughout childhood. We were approached in restaurants and grocery stores and complimented on the pleasure it was to be around my children. The same is now true of my grandchildren. My kids are now responsible, open minded, intelligent adults and an asset to society.
Despite this, the world is still full of parents who believe in "spare the rod and spoil the child", and who believe there is no other way.

When people believe that hitting is the only way to discipline, they are not exploring other ways that are equally effective, and often yield better communication, and produce more well adjusted children, or more well adapted animals.
I don't use smacking in training horses because it is not necessary, and it teaches very little.

If an aggressive horse goes on the attack and comes at me, you bet I will defend myself with whatever it takes. But I never initiate aggressive methods in the name of discipline or training.
I don't use hitting and other harsh methods aimed at gaining control because they are absolutely not necessary to gaining cooperation from horses at any level. I want the horse to bend to my will. But I want the horse to think about why it works out better for him when he trusts my judgment and responds as I am asking him to. That just doesn't get accomplished by smacking.
Horses kick and bite each other because they have no other means to discuss problems and work them out among each other. They also don't train each other to respond to light vibrations from a bit, or to perform grand prix dressage, do they? We want horses to do more than what they do in the wild, so we can't use kicking and biting to achieve our goals. We are the evolved, intelligent species. We have the capacity to use our superior intellect to get into the minds of our horses and use what we find there to "reason" them into cooperating without all the bullying and nonsense they are restricted to in their relationships with each other.

Why do train tracks make a tingling or ringing noise when a train is approaching?

Whenever a train is approaching, the tracks emit a sound I describe as "tingling". At first I thought it had to do with electric current being passed through the third rail, but I hear this sound on non-electric tracks too. A cursory web search revealed no information about this.

My theory is that the sound is due to structural resonance from the train's vibrations. Does anyone know for sure?
